Complete your Texas driver’s ed and written test online

Overview

If you’re 18-24 years old and haven’t completed a formal teen driver education course, the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) requires you to take an approved Texas Adult DRIVER’S Ed course. Our online course is the fastest and easiest way to meet this requirement and get your Texas learner’s permit (optional for adults) or driver’s license.

Enroll today and complete the six-hour course from home at your own pace. No classroom needed—our course is 100% online and includes the DPS written test. After finishing the course, you can print your ADE-1317 driver education certificate, which you’ll need when applying for your optional adult learner’s permit or required adult driver’s license at the DPS office.

Our course simplifies the process by providing a checklist of all documents required at the DPS. After completing the course and passing the road test with a DPS officer, you’ll be ready to drive with your Texas driver’s license.

Why wait? Get started now with our quick, easy, and TDLR-approved online Texas Adult Driver’s Ed course, and take the first step toward your independence on the road.

  • Road signs and signals

  • Basic car care and maintenance
  • Drug and Alcohol laws

  • Practice Driver's License Tests

  • Step 1: Enroll:

Sign up for our TDLR-approved Adult DRIVER’S Ed course. Virtual Drive is a Texas driving school approved by TDLR (#C2636). Start your training immediately—many students complete the course in a single day.

  • Step 2: (Ages 18-24):

Complete the six-hour online DRIVER’S ed training at your own pace. Log in and out anytime, and finish in one day or over several sessions.

  • Step 3: Pass the DPS Written Test:

The final test in the course is the DPS written driver’s license test. You can take it online from the comfort of your home. Most students pass on the first try, but if needed, you can retake it after reviewing the course material.

  • Step 4: Print Your ADE-1317 Certificate:

After completing the course and passing the test, download and print your ADE-1317 certificate within 24 hours. Present it at your DPS office to apply for your permit or license. Expedited certificate delivery is available for $9.95, but next-day delivery is free.

  • Step 5: Apply for Your License:

After completing the course, apply for your permit or license at the DPS. If you’re ready for the road test, schedule it and take it at your local DPS. If not, you have the option to enter the process more slowly and apply for an adult learner’s permit to practice driving with a fully-licensed adult over 21.

Drivers over age 25 are not required by Texas law to complete formal driver education, but it’s not uncommon for first-time drivers in this age group. The process to get a permit or driver’s license is the same as for those aged 18-24, but without the required course. However, enrolling in our Texas Adult Drivers Education course is the easiest way to prepare for the DPS written test, which can be taken online as part of the course—no extra trips to the DPS required.
